When you arrive for your volunteer placement in Buenos Aires, one of the things that you are going to want to purchase is a cell phone for your time here; it’s a great way to keep in touch with the friends you have, call a taxi when necessary, and just to keep in touch with the world.

Here is how you can go about buying a cell phone in Buenos Aires.

First, if you do not have a D.N.I, which comes with residency, you cannot sign up for a phone contract. So, unless you know someone with a D.N.I or are friends with an Argentine that is willing to sign up for the plan while you use it, forget about getting a cell plan.

There are a few big companies in the city where you can buy a cell phone and then buy phone cards that will allow you to put credit into your phone.

The major three are

Movistar

Claro

Personal

These three offer similar priced phones and similar priced phone credit cards. You must head to one of their offices in the city and buy a cell phone and a chip (which is put into the phone with your number), and then head to a kiosko(corner store) and buy a card for that company. For example, if you buy a phone from Claro, you buy a Claro card.

These cards can be purchased for AR$10, AR$20, AR$30, AR$50, and AR $90. For the best deal, you buy a bigger card amount and you will receive extra credit. For example, with AR$20 you often receive AR$10 free, with AR$50 you receive AR$45 free.

To use the card, call the number on the back and then enter in the code that is under the part you scratch off.

Average prices for calls are like this: AR$1.5 for local calls, AR$3.00+ for international, and about AR$.06 for texts.

Any Questions?

For those of you who do not know, Buenos Aires is a city full of Italian immigrants, who came to this port city in the last century, and have much to do with why Buenos Aires is such a culturally rich city. The Italians influenced Buenos Aires in many ways including architecture, dialect, religion, intellectual thought, philosophy, and more, and carried on the many traditions and customs that have been in Italy for hundreds of years. Another thing, and some believe equally important, that they brought with them was beautiful, delicious, and scrumptious Italian pizza! And who better to serve you pizza than a restaurant that has been around since pizza first made its way to the streets of Buenos Aires.

Los Inmortales is a name known on the streets of Buenos Aires. This restaurant that opened its doors in 1950 and it has everything to prove it; housed in an old space, the walls are lined with antique photos of celebrities and entertainers that have gathered here over the years, and if you ask any server, they will be able to give you all of the names of their famous clientele. The atmosphere is ‘old-style porteno’ with few renovations over the past half century that it has been open. Their menu features more than 50 different styles of pizza, each perfectly cooked and layered with fresh ingredients and despite its famous name, Los Inmortales has continued to serve up each plate at affordable prices.

If you are in volunteering in Buenos Aires and want to experience a night of famous Italian pizza in a place of history, Los Inmortales is it!

Los Inmortales
Lavalle 746
(Open 11am-12pm daily)

If you are in a volunteer placement in Buenos Aires and have been thinking of taking a relaxing weekend away with your friends or fellow volunteers, there are many places throughout Argentina that are beautiful to visit but if you are looking to relax in a beautiful city, there is one must-see place that cannot be compared to any other…

The city of Rosario, located only 300km from Buenos Aires and on the beautiful Rio Parana, is known for its tranquility and beauty, as well as one of the number one weekend destinations for residents of Buenos Aires. Considered an important city in Argentina due to its shipping port, railroad terminal, and shipping point for the eastern provinces, Rosario’s population continues to grow as does its city centre, and construction of business and residential areas.

Due to its high tourism numbers, young residents, and long history, Rosario is a city full with community centres, art galleries and museums, and hosts plenty of shows, concerts, and other cultural events all year long. The city also offers up plenty of great restaurants, cafes, and bar, especially alongside the river where a variety of delicious seafood is served. The nightlife is also great in Rosario, especially during the summer months when groups of locals and foreigners head to the streets and local venues to dance until the early morning hours.

If you are living and volunteering abroad in Buenos Aires and are looking to take a weekend away from the ‘big city’, head to Rosario for some cultural, cuisine, and just an unforgettable time!

Created in 1972 by the United Nations, World Environment day is a day where environmental awareness and responsibility is celebrated around the globe in the hopes of improving the environmental state of our planet and all of its inhabitants. This day, since 1972, has only grown in popularity, spreading over the countries of the world, and gaining more and more public interest and support.

This June 5th in Buenos Aires, World Environmental Day will be celebrated with a free screening of ‘Home’; this movie will be the first in history to be released simultaneously on all media, meaning TV, Theatre, DVD, and Internet, across our 5 continents.

‘Home’ or ‘The Earth From Above’, was created by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, and is a film shot from the sky in high definition, showing the earth’s landscapes from a bird’s eyes view, shot using large-scale aerial photography. The film was created in order to present to people the earth’s beauty, yet from a different perspective than we are normally used to in order to try to spark some new interest in environmental responsibility. Buenos Aires has been one of the lucky major cities to be chosen for a free outdoor screening of this masterpiece, held at Plaza Naciones Unidas, Figueroa Alcorta & Austria at 9:00pm.

If you are in an environmental volunteer placement in Buenos Aires or if you are interested in the environment, this is a must-see for you in Buenos Aires. Invite your volunteer companions, friends, and family, as the best way to make a change is to begin my educating the people around you.

Let us know what you think about World Environment Day? Are there more ways you can think of to spread awareness in Buenos Aires?

If you are in a volunteer placement in Buenos Aires and have been thinking of taking a relaxing weekend away with your friends or fellow volunteers, there are many places throughout Argentina that are beautiful to visit but if you are like wine, there is one must-see place that cannot be compared to any other…

Mendoza

The gorgeous city of Mendoza is one of the most talked about cities in Argentina because of its world famous wine, outdoor activities, natural beauty, and great city life. Only 1000km away from Buenos Aires, Mendoza makes for a great weekend away to discover the beauty and of course, wine, of this region in Argentina.

Mendoza has almost 600,000 residents, mostly from both Italian and French background, giving the city a modern feel with a strong traditional past. The city is well-kept, clean, and structurally neat, and every year accommodates thousands of visitors, offering hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes, bars, and shopping centers to keep them busy. Due to the local made wines, almost every café, bar, restaurant, and even corner store serves wine!

The vineyards can be visited by car, foot, or bicycle, and most offer daily tastings and tours of the vineyards, as well as information on export of the fantastic wines.

There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy such as horseback riding in the Andes Mountains, mountain climbing, hiking, and river rafting.

Every year Mendoza celebrates a National Wine Festival where wine and traditional music and dance are celebrated among locals and visitors alike.

Mendoza is one of Argentina’s unique cities and a great place to go whether you are traveling here, living, or a volunteer in Buenos Aires who is looking for a fun weekend away!
