What To Pack When Volunteering in Argentina

backpackPlanning or thinking about embarking upon a volunteering adventure in Argentina? There is plenty of preparation that goes into world traveling, but don’t forget the small stuff!

While volunteering you will have the opportunity to go on excursions as well as work in very different and exciting settings throughout Argentina. Whether you are helping children on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, or developing environmentally friendly changes in Mendoza, you will want to come prepared!

Backpacks are extremely convenient, but given that you wear them on your back, you have to be cautious while traveling about the city. Like many major cities, petty theft is very common on the streets of Buenos Aires. Don’t fear! While you may feel a little strange at first, most people wear their backpacks on the front of their body when in crowded areas. When you are outside of the city, this is not such a big concern.

Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind when packing your bag everyday!

  • Prepare For Anything: Volunteering is an exciting and life-changing opportunity. Everyday will bring something new, exciting, and unpredictable. You will want to prepare for the best and the worst! This means, bring a camera (but store it safely) to take pictures! Also, always have a small umbrella on hand; while most of the days in Argentina are bright and sunny, you can’t always predict the weather.
  • Pack Lightly: While commuting to your volunteer site, or going on excursions, you will not want to be debilitated by a big heavy bag around your shoulders. It is important to carry around the essentials, but feel free to leave the heavy travel books at home! Keep weight in mind as you are making choices between clothes, food, gadgets, etc.
  • Bring Fuel: No, we don’t mean take gasoline along for the ride, but bring fuel for your body! It is always a good idea to bring a water bottle (be environmentally friendly and reuse) and some granola bars or other non-perishable snacks. While some volunteering opportunities may specify to pack a lunch or that food will be provided, always stay on the safe side and have something ready.

What Not To Bring: Leave your laptop at home when possible. Not only does this weigh you down, but if it is not necessary, the risk is too high! External factors like theft and accidents are too costly to ignore. Typically, if you need internet access, there are plenty of internet cafes throughout Argentina where you can stay connected!

Take pride in your backpack! It will become part of you as you take it along on your great South American adventures and experiences. It’s a good idea to invest in a nice backpack before you leave, find something comfortable, practical, and stylish if you prefer!
